Colour has a story: a hands-on textile evening at the Whitworth

A free Manchester session connects cotton, natural pigments and storytelling—with booking needed and a clear distinction from a crochet class.

Original reporting notes. A little curiosity goes a long way.

Colour, texture & a little imagination

What has been announced?

The Whitworth’s events programme lists Colours in the Field: Cotton, Empire, and Textile Practices for 5 November 2026, 6–7.30pm. Arianna Tozzi and artist Himanshi Parmar are named in the session. The announcement connects cotton, natural pigments and research with a hands-on screen-printing activity. It is listed as free with booking required.

This is a wider textile session, not a lesson in crochet stitches. That distinction matters: it may interest a crocheter who is curious about colour and materials, but it should not be booked expecting a hook-and-yarn class.

Why look beyond the hook?

A colour palette is more than a pile of pretty shades. The fibres, the colour-making process and the people involved all belong to the story of a textile. Learning about a different craft can give you a new question to bring back to crochet, even when the techniques are completely different.

For your own project notebook, try separating three things: the colour you notice, the material it sits on, and the idea it makes you think about. A warm pink on cotton might suggest something very different from the same shade on fluffy yarn. You are collecting observations, not copying someone else’s finished artwork.

Check before you go

Use the museum’s programme for booking, access and age guidance. It also records a different October artist talk as postponed, a useful reminder that an old event summary is not enough. Our listing points to the actual programme so you can check the session you mean.

If this sort of visit is new to you, one thoughtful question is plenty: “How was that colour made?” can open up a whole conversation.

A couple of useful words

Pigment
A substance that gives a material its colour.
Screen printing
