A hook can help explain a shape

Crochet is showing up in a science museum, and that feels like a brilliant place for it. MIT Museum’s Crochet Coral Reef exhibition is scheduled from 14 August 2026 to 14 February 2027. It brings together work by Margaret and Christine Wertheim with paper-sculpture explorations by Erik and Martin Demaine.

More than a pretty display

The museum announcement links the exhibition with mathematics, marine science and community participation. Yarn makes an abstract shape something you can turn, compare and discuss. That does not mean a crocheted reef repairs a real one; the artwork offers a way into the questions.

Our little learning connection

Try comparing a plain swatch with a sample that gains extra stitches, then describe the difference in its edge. Our lesson about ruffles explains that experiment. The illustration here is original site artwork, not a photograph of the exhibition or a copy of its sculptures. Check the museum’s own information if you need current visiting details.
