5 Things Every Beginner Crocheter Should Know
So you've decided to learn crochet โ yay! ๐ Here are the five things I really wish someone had told me on day one.
1. Start with a medium hook and smooth yarn
A 4mm or 5mm hook and a worsted-weight acrylic yarn (in a light colour so you can see your stitches) are the perfect combo for beginners. Save the fluffy, fuzzy yarn for later โ trust me!
2. Learn just 4 stitches first
- Slip knot โ where everything begins.
- Chain (ch) โ your foundation.
- Single crochet (sc) โ small and sturdy.
- Double crochet (dc) โ taller and faster.
That's it. With those four, you can make scarves, granny squares, washcloths and more.
3. Count your stitches every row
I know, I know โ it's not fun. But losing or adding a stitch is the #1 reason beginner projects look wonky. Count at the end of every row until it becomes a habit.
4. Tension comes with time
Your first few rows will look tight, then loose, then tight again. That's totally normal! Your hands are learning. Don't pull your yarn โ let it flow gently across your fingers.
5. Frogging is part of the fun
"Frogging" means undoing your work (because you rip-it, rip-it ๐ธ). Every crocheter does it โ even me. Pulling out a few rows isn't failure, it's part of the craft.
Bonus: little projects to start with
- A simple chain bracelet
- A 6" granny square
- A small washcloth in single crochet
Made one of these? Tag me โ I'd love to see! ๐
